NCME’s
Mission
The NCME serves as a source of materials, support
services, and professional development opportunities
for educators and industry professionals. The
NCME, an NSF National Resource Center, is a leader
in manufacturing engineering technology education
and offers a variety of products and services
to both academic and industry professionals including:
curriculum modules in nine subject areas covering
technical skills, soft skills, math, and science;
a self-guided curriculum development kit with
a step-by-step instruction manual and template
for creating competency-based activities; grant
proposal development; grant management and evaluation;
and professional development workshops in activity-based
learning and authentic assessment. Most recently,
the NCME has established the Manufacturing Education
Resource Center (MERC) to serve as an electronic
clearinghouse for high quality materials and best
practices in manufacturing education.
NCME’s History
The NCME began as a workforce development partnership
between Sinclair Community College, Ohio’s
largest and most affordable two-year college,
and the University of Dayton, a small, private
Catholic university. In 1995, the NCME was funded
by the National Science Foundation (NSF) under
their Advanced Technological Education (ATE) program
as a National Center of Excellence in manufacturing
education. With NSF and other funding, the NCME
produced a two-year manufacturing technology education
degree program. In addition, we developed powerful
tools for curriculum development using activity-based
learning as a foundation for manufacturing education.
