ALT #3: The Coin Toss

Overview

In this ALT, you work with a partner to make a frequency chart and a histogram. Through this hands-on experience, you are familiarized with tools for making statistics useful and accessible.

After completing this ALT, you should be able to demonstrate the following competencies:

  • Collect, process, and display data so that usable information is represented (Comp. 1).
  • Prepare basic charts and graphs (Comp. 2).
  • Make inferences based on data analysis
    (Comp. 3).
  • Apply measures of central tendency and variability (Comp. 4).

Materials and Equipment
No materials or equipment are needed to complete this ALT.

Safety and Disposal
No special safety or disposal procedures are required.

Pre-Activity

To prepare for the activity:

Activity

In your team, perform the following steps to complete the activity:

  1. You and your partner will be given a paper cup and 10 pennies.
  2. Read Instruction Sheet: Coin Toss and complete Data Sheet: Coin Toss.
  3. Your mediator will bring the group together to create a frequency chart and histogram from your data.

Post-Activity

Your team should now post all of its results recorded on Data Sheet: Coin Toss to the discussion board.

Assessment
Your facilitator may use Assessment Sheet: Coin Toss from your Basic Statistical Variation Participant Journal to evaluate your results from the activity and your posting to the Discussion Board
