ALT #4: Is a Kiss Just a Kiss?

Overview

The purpose of this ALT is to help you better understand the normal distribution and its applications. You weigh the Kisses® in one full bag and construct a histogram.

In this ALT, you work in a team to discover that the distribution tends to be normal and that this is a reasonable distribution for many processes.

After completing this ALT, you should be able to demonstrate the following competencies:

  • Collect, process, and display data so that usable information is represented (Comp. 1).
  • Prepare basic charts and graphs (Comp. 2).
  • Make inferences based on data analysis
    (Comp. 3).
  • Apply measures of central tendency and variability (Comp. 4).

Materials and Equipment
No materials and equipment are needed to complete this ALT.

Safety and Disposal
Make sure you have thoroughly washed your hands an that all the candy is handled sanitarily.

Pre-Activity

To prepare for the activity:

Activity

In your team, perform the following steps to complete the activity:

  1. Complete Data Sheet: Is a Kiss Just a Kiss?
  2. As a team, prepare a short report for posting on the Discussion Board. Make your report interesting as well and informative.

Post-Activity

Your team should now post all of its results recorded on Data Sheet: Is a Kiss Just a Kiss? and your team report to the discussion board.

Assignment
There are no instructions to prepare for Transfer Activity: A Handful of Beans.

Assessment
Your facilitator may use Assessment Sheet: Is a Kiss Just a Kiss? from your Basic Statistical Variation Participant Journal to evaluate your results from the activity and your posting to the Discussion Board.
