Authentic Learning Task (ALT) #5: Setting a Light Bulb Warranty Period

Overview

In this ALT, you analyze data to set a warranty period for 7-volt light bulbs. Using a graph, summary statistics, and an appropriate z-score, you determine that warranty time so that a company is responsible for replacing (at most) 5% of its production. Cost issues concerning warranties are also addressed.

After completing this ALT, you should be able to demonstrate the following competency:

  • Determine a product warranty period using data which illustrate a normal distribution (Comp. 7).
