Statistical Distributions - An Introduction

Printer-Friendly Version

Statistical Distributions introduces you to the analysis of statistical distributions, including collecting data, using graphing calculators, and solving real-world problems. In addition, this module discusses the establishment of warranty periods as a function of the failure rate at different stages of a product's life cycle.

Through a series of practical hands-on activities and data analysis problems, this module allows participants to construct a broad definition of statistical distributions and to apply that knowledge to the practical application of statistical quality control.

After completing this module, you should be able to demonstrate the following competencies:

  • Create and interpret exponential, uniform, and normal distributions (Comp. 1).
  • Apply the concept of random variables to generate and interpret probability distributions, including uniform, normal, and exponential (Comp. 2).
  • Construct an exponential distribution graph from collected data and use the graph to formulate a description regarding the behavior of the data (Comp. 3).
  • Graph and analyze a learning curve in order to make a decision (Comp. 4).
  • Construct a histogram representing a uniform distribution; determine the validity of "systems" to predict random events (Comp. 5).
  • Describe the effect of changing the mean and standard deviation for uniform and normal distributions (Comp. 6).
  • Determine a product warranty period using data which illustrate a normal distribution (Comp. 7).
