| Overview
Statistical experimentation can be considered the manipulation
of dials to adjust the output to obtain the desired result.
In this ALT, you are introduced to the elements of an experimental
design program in a very practical workplace. You experiment with
the independent variables of temperature and time in a brewery,
manipulating these factors in an attempt to maximize the shelf life
of the brewery's beer.
After completing this ALT, you should be able to demonstrate the
following competency:
- Use sound sampling techniques and data analysis to make repeatable,
defensible inferences (Comp. 1).
Materials and Equipment
No materials or equipment are required for this ALT.
Safety and Disposal
Be careful when working with any very hot liquid.
Pre-Activity
To prepare for the activity:
- Read the informational materials found on pages 11-16 in the
Participant Journal. No additional special preparation is required.
Activity
In your team, perform the following steps to complete the activity:
- In your team, refer to Instruction Sheet: Save the Brew.
- Individually complete Data Sheet: How I Saved the Brew.
- With your team, present your results to the group, including
the strategies used.
Post-Activity
Your team should now post its results from the activity
to the Discussion Board.
Assignment
To prepare for ALT #2: The Predictive Powers of Ice Cream, read
Instruction Sheet: Shake, Shake, Shake.
Assessment
Your facilitator may use Assessment Sheet: Save the Brew to evaluate
your results from the activity and your posting to the Discussion
Board.
