Authentic Learning Task (ALT) #2:
The Egg Drop Auction

Printer-Friendly Version

Overview

In this Authentic Learning Task (ALT), the same teams as in ALT #1 will once again build containers designed to keep an egg from breaking in a drop of 10 feet. However, in this activity, teams will be required to bid to obtain material. Because of this added factor, issues from the norming and performing stages, including idea generation, problem solving, and decision making, are likely to be more evident than in ALT #1.

After completing this ALT, you should be able to demonstrate the following competencies:

  • Name the four stages of team development (Comp. 1).
  • Identify the elements of each team development stage (Comp. 2).
  • Evaluate team performance based on team principles (Comp. 3).
  • Utilize teamwork principles to encourage effective teamwork (Comp. 4).
  • Explain and implement an effective problem-solving process within a team (Comp. 5).

Materials and Equipment
No materials or equipment are needed to complete this ALT.

Safety and Disposal
Wash hands thoroughly after handling raw eggs to avoid accidental ingestion of bacteria such as salmonella.
